Are your enclosed trailers made in New Zealand or are they imported?
All our trailers are 100% NZ designed and manufactured in our Rotorua factory. We are an official New Zealand FernMark Lincencee (No: NZFM101078). It is a trademark endorsed by the New Zealand Government designed to promote and protect NZ made products & services globally and symbolises trust and authenticity.
What size trailer can I legally tow?
New Zealand Transport Agency’s (NZTA) regulations limit trailers to 2.55m wide and 12.5m long, with a maximum combined weight of 3,500kg on a standard license. It is important that you match the trailer size with your vehicle’s towing capacity. We can help you with this.
Do I need brakes on my trailer?
In New Zealand, there are no legal requirements for brakes. However, most vehicles have a limit for unbraked towing (often around 750 kg), so check your vehicles rating.
- A trailer with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of up to 2,000kg – No brakes required but the entire fleet must stop within 7m from 30 km/h). If your trailer weighs more than 750kg fully loaded, we strongly recommend adding a braking option for safety.
- A trailer with a GVM between 2,001kg and 2,500kg – Brakes required on at least one axle (override or cab-controlled) + safety chains or breakaway system.
- A trailer with a GVM between 2,501kg and $3,500kg – Brakes required on all axles + independent parking brake + breakaway system.

Can I customise my trailer?
Yes, you can! We design and manufacture our own parts that can easily be added to our Hauler or Karter ranges (such as bike chocks, tyre racks, spare wheel mounts, shelving & cabinetry. Any brackets or additional features are added during the initial fabrication process, so it is an easy assembly once it comes back from powder coating or galvanising. Can I build or customise my own trailer?
Absolutely! We sell accessories and other trailer parts & components in our online shop.
Can I use your enclosed trailers for commercial purposes?
Absolutely! Our enclosed trailers are versatile and can be customised for a wide range of commercial applications, including motor sports and racing, furniture transport, mobile workspaces, food service, display units, and functioning spaces for tradies.
We prioritise durability and long-term performance. We never use pre-galvanised steel because every cut and weld compromises its integrity. Instead:
- All trailer axles and drawbars are fully hot-dip galvanised.
- Trailer frames up to 1.5m wide are also hot-dip galvanised.
- Frames wider than 1.5m are blasted and powder-coated after fabrication (NZ largest zinc bath has a limited width of 1.5m), ensuring a complete seal for maximum rust protection and durability.
Can I view or track my trailer during construction?
We don’t operate an open-door policy at our factory, as this allows our team to focus on building your trailer without interruptions. However, we will keep you updated on your trailer’s progress with regular status updates. Please note, we do not send images during the build process due to copyright and design protection reasons.
Do you have a showroom I can visit?
We don’t have a traditional showroom as most of our trailers are built to order. However, we occasionally have short-term stock available. Please check our online shop or give us a call before visiting to confirm availability.
Do you deliver to the South Island or other countries?
Yes, we do! We work closely with third party providers for deliveries nationwide, including to the South Island, and Australia. For any inquiries originating from Australia, please visit our website.
Do you trade-in second-hand trailers?
Yes, we do. However, only the trailers that we have built ourselves. See our online shop or any new or secondhand trailers in stock.
Do you provide trailer repairs and assessments for WOF and insurance purposes?
Yes, we do. Top Gear Trailers offers comprehensive trailer repair services and Insurance assessments. We also work closely with insurance providers to carry out repairs on trailers of any brand, ensuring your trailer meets compliance and safety standards.
Do you carry out Warrant of Fitness (WOF) assessments on trailers?
No, we don’t. To ensure independence and non-bias, all WOF assessments for our trailers are completed by a third-party provider.
